CWC 2019 Match 8: India vs South Africa Pre Match Analysis

Till now, South Africa could not win any ICC organized event let alone Cricket World Cup. On the other hand, India has achieved this feat two times till now. In 1983, Kapil Dev led the Indian Cricket team to their first triumph ever in the ICC Cricket World Cups. The match was played at the Lords Cricket ground against the mighty West Indies. West Indies was led by the Clive Lloyd, where West Indies was defeated by 43 runs. Mohinder Amarnath was the man of the match where he took three vital wickets with an economy of just 1.71.

In 2011, The Men in Blues had won this prestigious event again. This time, Mahinder Singh Dhoni led the Indian Cricket team to the triumph. They achieved this feat against the Srilankan Cricket team at the Wankhede cricket stadium, Mumbai. MS Dhoni was the man of the match in the final due to his knock of 91 runs off 79 balls.

Indian Cricket team has been really up to the mark in the last few years before this year’s Cricket World Cup. The Indian Cricket team had got their place in the ICC Champions trophy 2017 final under the captain Virat Kohli. Unfortunately, luck did not favor them. Otherwise, they could be the winner of the ICC Champions trophy, 2017.

After this set back in the final, they have been in the right direction. They toured South Africa in 2018, where they defeated them comprehensively by 5-1 in their own backyard. Recently, India has also won against the New Zealand Cricket team by 4-1. Meanwhile, India had also won the last Asia Cup which was held in UAE. They beat their arch-rivals (Pakistan) two teams comprehensively in that event also.

On the other hand, South Africa has always been vulnerable, whenever they have got a chance to win the ICC Cricket World in the knock out stages. Either luck did not favor them (like in 1992 world cup semi-final) or they have not played well. They are not being considered as favorites to win the world cup this time but, there could be an outside chance if they clicked on the right time.

Their bowling department has always got an edge over their batting department. Their fiery bowling unit includes Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Nagidi, Dale Steyn, Imran Tahir, and few youngsters.

The Proteas have got their top three set with the likes of Hashim Amla, Quinton De Kock, and Faf Duplessis. Their middle order has been fragile in recent times, after the retirement of AB Devilliers and Duminy not being in the team, they have not got their middle order in the right shape. Players like Heinrich Klaasen and Andile Phehlukwayo have really worked out for their middle order problem.

South Africa Cricket team has options like Chris Morris and David Miller to be used as a late order hitter in order to improve their run rate in the latter part of their innings. South Africa has always been a giant in the Cricketing world but they have not got their chance to play the world cup final till now.

If we look at the current form of both the teams, India are the clear favorites to win this clash against South Africa. Recently, India has defeated South Africa in a few bilateral series also. India has a compact and consistent batting unit. Their batsmen have been giving performances since the last World Cup held in 2015.

India’s Batting unit has shown that they have the ability to chase any big target. On the other side, critics have shown their concern over Amla’s slow but steady approach of developing an inning. South Africa has problems in their middle order, they need to sort out their middle order in order to win this world cup.

India has not got their reliable number four in the batting order, critics are discussing few players such as Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane, Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, and Ambati Rayudu. If we look at the uncertainty of batting order, South Africa has got more batting issues than India.

If we compare the bowling units of both the teams, then South Africa and India have got fairly balanced pacers and spinners. Fans are hoping to get an exciting contest to watch between these two giants.
