CWC 2019 Match 7: Afghanistan vs Sri Lanka Pre Match Analysis

Currently, the way the Afghan Cricket Team is improving may place them among the top 6 Cricket Teams in the coming years. Even though they did not get the spot directly in the World cup 2019, But the way they defeated Windies in qualifying round final is clearly indicating how much they have revamped their standard of playing cricket. They tried their fate in the qualifying round final to book the ticket for the world cup and they have successfully chased it.

Their main bowler Rashid Khan has been amazing for the past 2 years. He has been playing the role of oxygen for the Afghan Cricket Team. As he played a lot of domestic cricket in Pakistan which have helped him to acquire the real exposure needed for international cricket. Right at the moment, the Afghan Cricket team is relying upon this young gun, as he has the potential to take the match away single-handedly no matter which batting side he is bowling against.

This 20 years old superstar has played 56 ODI and 38 T20’s in which he took 123 and 75 wickets respectively, and this is what his explosive bowling is doing since his debut in International Cricket. He is also reliable with the Bat, many of his match-winning innings in the League Cricket encouraged him to keep the momentum in the international cricket and hence he proved himself as a bowling all-rounder as well.

Another young talented bowler, Mujeeb ur Rehman has created an excellent impact in a very short span of time. His versatile deliveries have always crumbled the batsman in the middle overs. Being a partner with leggy Rashid, this man has always done something extraordinary which paved the way for his selection in the IPL.

The only thing they need to seriously focus on is their fast bowling department which is deprived of the speedy bowlers to get the benefits from the early and death overs. Whereas the Afghan cricket team has proved themselves when it comes to big hitting as they have recently broken the record of the highest score in an inning of t20 match. They achieved this milestone while playing T20 against Ireland. However, they are still unable to acquire the batsman to provide a calmness to the innings alongside their aggressive batting unit.

Apart from some bilateral series against the teams like Ireland they have also encountered with the top teams like Sri Lanka and India in the Asia Cup which was held recently in UAE. Afghanistan carried their excellent form in the Asia cup as well and at some point of time, they were fairly about to win then matches against India and Pakistan but failed. While they successfully managed to defeat the Sri Lankan team in the Asia cup. Which was ultimately a victory of the year for the Afghan cricket team.

On the other side, Sri Lanka has been the champion of the ICC cricket world cup 1996. They achieved this Milestone in the Captaincy of Arjuna Ranatunga. Till now they are unable to repeat the History, however, they have played two consecutive finals of ICC world cups in 2007 and 2011. In 2007 they got defeated by Australia while India defeated them in 2011.

After the world cup 2015 and the retirements of their frontline players. The team is unable to maintain their balance which brought nothing but consistent defeats in every format of the game. After the departure of Sangakkara and Jayawardene, team Sri Lanka has lost their consistency and temperament which was their key strength. The Humiliation they have been facing for the past 2 years has broked their team combination which can be a serious threat to their World Cup preparations.

Recently they toured South Africa and Australia. After getting persistent defeats against Australia, they finally managed to do something exceptional as they defeated South Africa in the Test series.

With this heroic achievement, they became the first Asian Team to win a test series against South Africa on their own soil. It was definitely a great achievement, and being a young and inexperienced side they got some serious confidence to prepare them for upcoming victories but despite surprising victory in the Test series they failed to continue this momentum, consequently got defeated badly in ODI and T20.

After getting defeated in Test, Africa Made a great Comeback and smash the Lankan Team. There are Numerous things, Lankan think tank needs to focus on prior to the World cup 2019.

Both The Teams have played only one Match against Each other in the History of World cups. It happened in ICC cricket World cup 2015, however, the Result went into the Lankan Favor as Sri Lanka defeated Afghanistan by 4 wickets.
